WHAT TO EXPECT

A complete continuum of spine care. It starts with understanding your pain.

Physical therapy, conditioning, interventional treatment and surgery all sit under one roof — and which one you need is a question we answer with a diagnosis, not a guess. Because our specialists and surgeons work as one team, your care moves with you instead of starting over.

DIAGNOSIS

No outside MRI required

You don’t need imaging from another provider to be seen. X-ray, MRI and CT are on site, so your diagnosis doesn’t wait on records requests or a second appointment somewhere else.

  1. STEP ONE

    Conservative Care

Physical therapy, physician-designed exercise programs, medication management and activity or lifestyle changes — the treatments that resolve most spine pain.

  2. STEP TWO

    Interventional Spine

Our physicians use in-office spine injections, nerve blocks and kyphoplasty to target pain at its source, often resolving pain without an operation.

  3. STEP THREE

    Spine Surgery

When surgery is the right treatment, our surgeons offer minimally invasive decompression, microdiscectomy, fusion and robotic-assisted spine surgery — planned with the same team that diagnosed you.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Questions patients ask first

Straight answers, before you pick up the phone.

Still have questions?
Do I need an MRI before my first visit?

No. You don’t need imaging from another provider to be seen. Our clinics have X-ray, MRI and CT on site, so if imaging is needed we can order it and read it here — no chasing down records, and no separate trip somewhere else before your treatment can start.

What happens at my first spine appointment?

Your specialist starts by listening: where the pain is, how long it’s lasted and what you’ve already tried. Next comes an exam of your posture, movement, strength, reflexes and nerve function. If imaging will help, X-ray, MRI or CT can be done on site. Before you leave, you’ll know what’s most likely causing your pain and which treatment options fit, so you can decide the next step together. Bring a photo ID, your insurance card and a list of your medications. If you already have imaging from somewhere else, bring it along, but you don’t need it to be seen.

What’s the difference between an interventional spine physician and a spine surgeon?

An interventional spine physician is a doctor trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation who diagnoses and treats spine pain without an operation. Their tools include epidural steroid injections, selective nerve blocks, nerve testing (EMG) and physician-designed exercise and therapy programs. A spine surgeon performs procedures such as discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion and disc replacement when a structural problem calls for surgery. At TOA they work as one team, so if your physician thinks surgery is worth considering, you’re referred to a TOA spine surgeon for an evaluation without starting over.

Will I need surgery for my back pain?

That depends on what’s causing it — and it’s a decision you make with your physician after a diagnosis, not before one. Many spine conditions respond well to physical therapy, conditioning and interventional treatment. When surgery is the right answer, your surgeon is already part of the same team.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

Usually not. You can book directly with a TOA spine specialist online or by phone. Some insurance plans, often HMOs and certain Medicare Advantage plans, require a referral from your primary care provider before you see a specialist, so check your plan’s rules before you book.

How soon can I get an appointment?

When you schedule online, you’ll see each physician’s open appointment times and can book the one that works for you, with no waiting for a call back. Availability varies by physician and location, so if the first name you try is booked further out than you’d like, check the other specialists near you. For a sudden injury that can’t wait, Orthopedic Urgent Care sees walk-in patients.

Will you take my insurance?

TOA accepts most major insurance plans. Coverage and network status depend on your specific plan, so before your visit, call your insurance company and ask whether Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance is in network for specialist care. If you’re uninsured or paying on your own, you can ask for a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before your appointment.
